It is my opinion (shared by most people) that Heroes 2 is superior to Heroes 1 in every way. It still works on my Windows XP PC that I keep around specifically for older games, and the CD music works fine on that (where it doesn't on my VM Ware)

But I maintain that it is the definite, last official version of the game, the only full-featured version, as as such, the only version worth playing. I'm sure there are other ways than VM Ware to play the Win95 version on newer PCs. It is the only way to make the game infinitely replayable. It is the last official (as per the original developers) version of the game. It's simply not the case for HOMM1 - there were two separate releases! It's really not that hard to understand, if you, like me, has been there from the very beginning of the series!Īt least HOMM2 was full featured on both the original DOS and Windows versions (and both came on the same CD). Geez! so please stop recommending dosbox to play the inferior earlier DOS version of the game without the map editor!! You can use VMWare or any other virtual machine software ( I only know VM Ware.) Works great, although CD music still doesn't play, I admit. This version's main selling point was it came with a MAP EDITOR and around 16 new maps that you could actually edit (the old maps of the dos version were included, but remained non-editable.Īs soon as I upgraded PCs over the years (and hence, windows OS), that version eventually stopped running, so I setup a virtual machine and installed Win98 on it to play my old games from the 1995-1997 awkward period of PC gaming. I'm an old guy, I bought the game shortly after the Windows 95 version came out back in early 1996.

Wow, there are a lot of ignorant people here when it comes to HOMM1, giving bad advice.
